April 2016

The 2016 Model Railway Exhibition was held on the weekend of 23rd and 24th April. It was very successful with attendance up on the previous year. There were 17 high quality layouts, trade stands, digital presentations, a display of photographic competition entries, and a display by the Sutton Coldfield Model Engineers. June 2016

Following the success of last year’s two night/three day trip to the North East, this year we headed South. Like all of our trips, the whole package of transport, heritage rail travel, and accommodation, was organised by members of the SCRS committee. On our way south to our hotel in Winchester, we stopped off at the Sindon and Cricklade Railway to ride on their DMU service and tour their workshops, and then at STEAM (the Museum of the Great Western Railway). The next day was spent travelling on and exploring the beautiful countryside of the Swanage Railway, as well as visiting their loco works and museum. On the final day we visited ‘The Watercress Line’. Those who wished could spend the day taking advantage of unlimited travel on the line, whilst a visit to nearby Jane Austen’s house was arranged for those who fancied something different. July 2016

As usual we had an evening visit in July, and this year it was to the 2ft gauge Amerton Railway in the nearby Staffordshire countryside. Having travelled there by vintage bus, we had exclusive use of the site including a steam hauled passenger service, and a tour of their shed and other buildings. A fish and chip meal at the onsite café rounded off a pleasant evening in a rural setting. (All photos taken by Clive Pipe.)

Also, in July the Society made a first visit to the Erewash Valley Model Engineers site near Nottingham. Again, transport was by vintage bus.

August 2016

In August, as well as out annual visit to the Balleny Green (Little Hay) home of the Sutton Coldfield Model Engineers (see also the diary entry for August 2015), we had a day visit to the Epping and Ongar heritage standard gauge railway in Essex, and the Leighton Buzzard narrow gauge railway. Murder Incorporated

December 2016

The annual Ladies Night took the form of a meal followed by a railway themed murder mystery evening, featuring 'Murder Incorporated' - pictured together with the Chairman and the Programme Secretary (photo by Clive Pipe). A highly enjoyable and fun evening was had by all - except the murderer and the victim, of course!
