Catalogue: online (full version from spring 2011)

To fill the gap in the market left by the closure of Kent Panel Controls in 2008 the Locomotive Model Shop decided to do something by using our experience with this design of controller. Using our old drawings, updating them and producing top of the range controllers that match the discontinued KPC ones. We also produce electronic equipment under the name of HM Products and market components under the Polytechnic and Poltec banners. Sorry we can't enter into corespondance relating to pre 2010.

It is intended that these KPC controllers will be available from early 2011. Controllers with the same electronic circuitry as the unswitched KPC feedback controller has been available from HM Products from 1984. These were manufactured to order and were available into the late 1990s. We are restarting production but they will look more like the ones built by the original KPC than those we built a decade ago.

The KPC controllers are unique in the way that they were designed to use a thyristor for the power handling component instead of a power transistor. For the technically minded modeller, the design uses a normal small signal transistor but also uses a programmable unijunction transistor. The combination of these components along with other passive electronic components make the KPC Feedback controller among the formost of none DCC model railway speed controllers.

Our personal connection with KPC began back in the 1980s, when a visitor to our trade stand purchased one of our own 'designed and produced in-house' model railway controllers at an exhibition in Liverpool back in the 1980s. We received a telephone call asking us if we were happy if a well known controller manufacturing company could use our design and produce copies exhibiting their company name and in return they would provide to us a quantity of controllers gratis. This seemed to be a good deal and we were happy to go along with the idea. In the 1990s Julian Holland the owner of the former KPC company became involved with this company who had used our design and we communicated over the phone on several occasions. We discovered that Julian was an electronic design engineer like our design cheif and he had taken on the product range of the company who had asked to use our design. We were delighted to find our basic design was still being used by KPC after twelve or fifteen years. Julian explained that he had redesigned the feedback circuit on the feedback controller to make it work more friendlier with Escap coreless motors and Portescap RG4 and RG7 motor and gearbox combinations. All future KPC switched feedback controllers will be manufactured with Julians improvements in place.

Our sister company, Poltec can supply electronic components that are more than suitable for the railway modeller.
