6th September 2007 - Nigel Lawton introduces sub-miniature belt drive components

Nigel Lawton has recently made a range of sub-miniature belt drive components available via his website. These are intended for use in small model railway mechanisms particularly in 009/HOe/HOn30 but also in N and Z. There are also already some applications in standard gauge 4mm scale modelling and even potential uses in 7mm scale for layout animation (e.g. operating cranes).

The product range currently consists of three sizes of turned brass pulley from 1.1mm root diameter to 5mm root diameter and a single size of EPDM drive belt with a 6.5mm ID. Further belt and pulley sizes will be added over the next few months. The existing products allow reductions of up to 4.5:1 to be achieved in a single step and a very compact volume. It would be impossible to produce such a high reduction with a single spur gear stage. A further benefit of belt drive is that it is very quiet and smooth whereas spur gears, unless skew cut and accurately meshed, are commonly noisy and uneven in operation when used in very small mechanisms.

These products may be combined Nigels sub-miniature motors, shafting and standard worm gears to produce up to 63:1 reduction motor to wheels in two stages.
