Well then. Modelzone is a chain store located in the merrion centre which offers parking at the usual leeds city council exhorbitant prices. The centre itself is at the top end of leeds - not the most accessible if using public transport but it should not be judged solely on that. As is typical of a high street store, the aspect of taking as much money from you as possible rather than establishing a long term relationship is prevelant - prices are generally much higher than at specialist model shops and staff, though friendly and helpful, are not expert. Another obvious downside of a chain store is the lack of ability in sourcing items that they do not necessarily stock - if the company does not sell it, that is the end of the discussion. however, the large scale nature of the company means that they do command some sway within the model railway market - modelzone exclusives are frequent in number and often very welcome. Indeed, in some cases, they are the missing link (East coast HST for example). The shop is otherwise well stocked and deals with all the basics - I am able to go there and get the simple things that I need, even if it is at a premium price. The other benefit is the quality of the website which allows all shopping to be conducted from home and the ability to shop the full portfolio of items, rather than just what is available in store. such is the way with this sort of business, specialist items are hard to find and, in most cases, are not stocked at all. Also, it aims mainly at the commercially popular '00 gauge' and will leave modellers of other gauges disappointed. A decent high street shop? Yes. A railway modellers heaven? No.
