Description: Chedham is located 'somewhere in the south midlands'.Such a location allows operation of stock from all regions of br from the 1950's onward. An up/down main line serves the station that has a bay platform at each end.Express,semi-Fast and local trains both run through and terminate. There is a lot of goods traffic running throuh the station and the avoiding line which gives access to a small loco shed/diesel depot and to the fair sized goods sidings and sheds. The edge of town area is depicted with many terraced houses, shops and a pub. The allotments are neat and well tended.A farm in the rolling hills and a remote country church is still used for funerals. While the roads are getting busier the area is still fairly sleepy. The signalmen use cycles rather than cars while a local bus service provides the main method of mechanised transport |

Description: Zonule - Small but perfectly modelled layout.
This is a 3 foot by 2 foot z gauge layout. The layout is of a small village set probably somewhere in germany. There is a lot going on for such a small place, and zonule is an example of what can be done if you only have limited space. Notice that the "Red baron" Makes a flying visit and so does a british "Brush 47" from time to time….

| KIDMORE MAGNA CURVE from
David Mitchell
in Reading |
|
(3 images available)
|
David Mitchell is the Committee Member of Berks Area Group N Gauge Society. |
Subject: N Gauge minimum space Era: 1950s + Description:
As my two existing shunting layouts were both linear in concept, I found that I needed a test track with continuous running in order to run in new locos. Having this in mind, I unashamedly copied a 1990’s design & whilst initially having just a bare board decided that a scenic finish could be accommodated using mainly parts from the “spares box”.
Constructed with little more track than supplied with a proprietary train set, Kidmore Magna measures just 30D” x 24W” (76cm x 61cm) with a scenic section of just 18D” (at max) x 24W”. It hopefully demonstrates that a successful model railway can be built in the smallest space and with minimal expense!
Operation:
As there are a just a handful of buildings to define a particular era , rolling stock operation can be varied by simply altering the type of road vehicles present. This allows running traffic both from late GWR days to the more recent past; occasionally this may include a WW2 Wehrmacht special from a local re-enactment society! As essentially a test track, the "anything goes" licence is frequently applied!
The layout featured in the Journal of the N Gauge Society, 4/10.

| THE KIDMORE GUMSTUMP from
David Mitchell
in Reading |
|
(3 images available)
|
David Mitchell is the Committee Member of Berks Area Group N Gauge Society. |
Subject: UK shunting Era: 1960s On Description: THE KIDMORE GUMSTUMP
In the late 1950’s, Chuck Yungworth, who then lived in northern Pennyslyvania USA, designed and built a small shelf HO gauge layout called the “Gum Stump & Snowshoe Railroad”. The layout was published in
Model Railroader magazine early in the Sixties and its intriguing
zig-zag design made it an immediate favourite. It has remained
one of the most popular layouts ever designed and the concept has
been listed among the elite Classic Small Railroads.
With the rise in popularity of good small layout designs in recent
years (and the co-incidental reduced amount of free space in modern homes), modellers have rediscovered Chuck’s original plan and
constructed modern versions of it.
The Kidmore Gumstump measures just 48” by 12” yet affords an
effective 12’ run by using Chuck’s zig-zag design. Operating
potential has been increased by increasing the right-hand yard
design from the original three sidings to five. Additionally a
passing loop has been added to “Anglicise” the layout. All
operations are carried out in full view, there is no fiddle yard.
Kidmore Gumstump has recently been published in The Journal of the N Gauge Society.

High Wycombe & District Model Railway Society
in High Wycombe |

|
Rod Coombs is the contact for this layout and
is the Webmaster of High Wycombe & District Model Railway Society. |
Description: Set on the American far West coast, Oceanside depicts an actual place but a fictitious setting between Los Angeles and San Diego.
The scene is somewhat unusual and tries to show three different areas. To the left as you look at the layout is a twin track mainline coming from Los Angeles with heavy tonnage pulled by a variety of railroad company's, and as this is a fictitious scene we have allowed Eastern American and Canadian stock to traverse the 'high iron'. There is a third track that is a branch line supposedly separated by a few miles skirting the rolling sun scorched hills of southern California. The branch line rounds a local lake where 'twitchers' (bird watchers) are seen looking for the native birds that frequent the area.
A new development of houses adorns the hillside overlooking the sea, and the main line runs close to the Pacific ocean passing secluded beached where bathers and surfers enjoy the hot climate.
Towering over the whole layout is Mount Joachim that is the highest point of the area and slopes down to the sea with rocky inlets that the railroad company's have crossed with various types of bridges and rock causeways. Circumnavigating the mountain is the branch line that appears and disappears whilst negotiating the numerous tunnels that abound in the terrain.
Entering the final scene, the branch line draws into the depot serving the suburb of La Paz, part of the city of Oceanside. Here trains leaving the city's central station drop commuters and wait for freight trains to either proceed in front of them or wait for a rolling meet. La Paz has also a stub end track where shuttle railcars serve the various suburban depots whilst heading towards the city centre.
Entering a tunnel the mainlines subterranean journey begins and ends, followed shortly by a further tunnel taking it to either the cities Union Station terminus or onwards as through traffic to San Diego. |

| DAWTON NEW STREET from

in Ely |

(3 images available)
|
David Evans is a member of March & District MRC and Ely and District MRC. |
Era: 1970s-1980s/1990s-2006 Description: This layout is featured in the January 2OO9 issue of ModelRail magazine.
The name ‘Dawton New Street' was derived from the seaside towns of Dawlish and Paignton in South Devon. The layout depicts sandstone cliffs similar to those found on the South Devon coast at Dawlish and Teignmouth.
The layout includes a multi-track main line station, a Motive Power Depot and a canal scene and these were achieved by locating the station beneath the town of Dawton, with short lengths of platforms protruding from beneath the town. Full length trains can be operated without having to have long platforms taking up most of the front of the layout.
Stock from all regions can be seen running, over the time periods of 1970s to 80s and from the 1990s 2006. Track is Peco finescale (Code 55) on the scenic side with Code 80 in the storage sidings. Points are operated by using SEEP point motors controlled by the ‘stud and probe' method on the control panel.
The layout has now attended 16 exhibitions to date and details of its next outings can be found in the 'Hall of Fame' section. |

Description: The layout is based on Crianlarich on the West Highland line circa 1985-1987(pre retb). Crianlarich is the last junction station left on the West Highland line. From here you can get to Oban or Fort William. It is operated to the working timetable for the summer of 1986 with additional workings & shunting moves slotted in. In the main the rolling stock is BR blue, Scotrail & Strathclyde PTE(dmu). The locomotives used in this era were mainly class 37s although class 47s could work the line to Fort William with the push-pull sets.
The layout had its 1st outing on 13/09/08 at the Bishop's Stortford show. It has also been booked to appear at Warley(NEC) in 2010. |

Description: It's Summer 1992. Yarnham is a small seaside town in West Sussex close to the banks of the River Arun. The station is situated at the end of a branch off the former LBSCR Coastway route. In former years there was a line that continued beyond the town to the harbour. Today the truncated remains form a headshunt for the wagon repair depot.
The station is served by various Mk1 slam door units working Coastway or Mid-Sussex line services.
Freight consists mainly of civil engineers wagons bound for the wagon repair depot. There is also speedlink traffic including steel, which uses the yard to run round. |

John Freer is the Vice Chairman of Phoenix Model Railway Club. |
Description: Zeitz is a model of a German junction station in continental "N" gauge. As viewed the left of the layout has a two track main line arriving over a bridge crossing the canal. After passing through the station complex two single bi-directional lines depart to the right. A small engine shed and service facility with working turntable nestles between the two single lines.
The model can be operated in different time periods according to the stock being worked at the time, our preferred periods being Epoch II ( 1923 - 1949) and Epoch III ( 1949 - 1980 ). We can just about justify this time span using mechanical semaphore signalling, not all lines were modernised even in Germany!
Zeitz is one of many layouts owned by members of "The Phoenix Model Railway Club" and is based at our spacious clubroom on the Quedgley Enterprise Center, Naas Lane, Gloucester

Subject: Settle to Carlisle Description: Batty Moor is based on the sidings at Blea Moor just North of the Ribblehead Viaduct on the Settle to Carlisle Railway. Because the area remained substantially unchanged from about 1945 to 1975 we can run trains from post war LMS, through nationalisation, and B.R steam to the blue diesel period. Not all at once but in set periods. The train formations are modelled on actual prototypes that ran along the Settle to Carlisle from The Thames Clyde Express to the various mineral workings. The layout is still being developed and work continues in the Twickenham club room every Friday evening. Visitors are most welcome and the group is looking for new members.

John Chandler are members of Liphook & District Model Railway Club and West Sussex N Gauge Society Group. |
Subject: Japanese Suburban Era: Present Day Description: Lynnbottom is best described as a Novel-T layout intended to show off the accessories available for the T Gauge system. The line is based West of Kawasaki, where Series 103 EMUs operate regular services, notably on the local Tsurumi Line (yellow stock), but also with the occasional visitor from the eight other companies who operate these units.
The layout is in two sections; the upper baseboard shows the Tsurumi Line in a typical backwater urban landscape with high-rise tower blocks and plenty of Urban Clutter but away from the main stream bustle of, say, Tokyo, thus retaining a rural atmosphere. The lower baseboard depicts a recreation area around a flooded quarry and featuring many activities; from Tai Chi to rock climbing, sailing and jet skis, the quarry is certainly a busy place. It is a matter of some debate amongst the local foresters as to which part of the forest is actually home to the Lava Tree.

Stuart Conlon is the contact for this layout and

Description: Riddleford Junction is an 'N' gauge looped layout, 8' x 2.5', with an upper branch terminus station and yard. A lower bi-Directional station serves the branch and lower yard. Behind the scenes is a five road fiddle yard. This layout was on the exhibition circuit in the 1980's and largely the work of Derek Forester. The layout was our only 'N' gauge layout and whilst Derek had produced interesting scenics, it was decided to refurbish. We replaced the track and control box enable more varied operation. The track plan remains as the original, with a little sprucing up here and there. The houses in the centre had to be replaced due to the originals being beyond repair. The only major change to the scenery is the two tunnels to the right of the layout which have now been staggered to permit a more gentle curve than the original. |

Subject: German mainline station and junction. Era: 1900's But Trains From 18 Description: A fictional German mainline station serving a small town. The fairly complex pointwork at the left end of the station allows commuter trains to terminate and give branch line access. A small, partly static, locomotive refuelling and refurbishing facility exists at one end of the station and a small freight yard at the other. The platforms are long enough to service 8-coach trains.
No specific area or epoch is represented but the Bavarian, Prussian and DRG trains (most of which are described at the front of the layout stand) are nearly all steam hauled and many are of specific historic interest. |

Description: The layout depicts a rural scene somewhere in ‘Middle England' with a farm and a working windmill, a country station and a small goods yard. The layout has evolved over several years out of a need to have somewhere to run the N gauge stock that belonged to my father, which I have now added to. My husband Stephen has done most of the building and wiring of the layout with a little help from friends. I did all of the scenery, the buildings are mostly Hornby Liddle End, the windmill being adapted by Stephen with a slow running motor fitted to the sails.
I hope you will enjoy looking at it as much as we have enjoyed building it!

Peter Richards is a member of Folkestone Hythe and District Model Railway Club. |
Subject: Modern USA various railroads Era: 1990's - Present Day Description: Cedar Canyon Junction has been created by using inspiration gained by the owners many photography trips to the Western United States. This N scale layout is based on modern times somewhere in the golden state of California. Both the Burlington Northern and Santa Fe Railroad, and the Union Pacific Railroad have running rights at Cedar Canyon Junction so a wide variety of motive power and freight trains can be seen – as well as Amtrak long distance trains. Union Pacific houses a locomotive repair and re-fuelling facility at Cedar Canyon Junction along with various other line side industries and a railroad station. The mountain scenery on the layout is to be credited to Doug Richards. Rolling stock is from Atlas/Kato and many Walthers kits have been used to try and give the feel of the American railroad scene. The layout is always being worked on and more buildings and scenery are constantly being added as time permits. The layout works on conventional electrics - Not DCC
The layout lives in South East kent and I'm open to offers for Model Railway exhibitions, having currently exhibited at Folkestone,Canterbury and Tonbridge. For one day only shows I'd probably not venture too far, say either Kent, E.Sussex or Surrey and would need to set up on a Friday night. But for 2 day shows I'm definatley open to all offers. The layout requires van hire to transport it to shows. |

Allan Trotter is the contact for this layout and
is a member of Eastbank MRC. |
Subject: BNSF and UP in Texas Era: 21st Century Description: ANDERSONVILLE TX A showcase for modern American railroading.
Andersonville TX, is a N-gauge layout which portrays the current operations of arguably the two most significant Class 1 Railroads in the USA today, i.E. Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway (BNSF) and the Union Pacific Railroad (UP).
The setting for the layout is in Texas at the imaginary town of Andersonville. The closest real life setting would be that around the town of Sweetwater, which is west of Abilene. Andersonville is served by a double-track main line belonging to BNSF and a single-track secondary main line operated by UP also passes through the town area. Two sidings service the needs of local industries. The passenger depot still functions, largely as a visitor centre but has also a small Amtrak office which fulfils the needs of the few rail passengers for the ‘Texas Eagle' which calls once a day both eastbound and westbound.
The time period is present day so the freight traffic to be seen on both lines is a mixture of intermodal, unit coal, chemicals and grain with the odd manifest appearing for good measure. The BNSF and UP locomotives to be observed are dominated by modern six-axle high-horsepower units working in multiple although, as in the real world, some older four-axle and six-axle units make an appearance. Amtrak's ‘Texas Eagle' is represented by a train of ‘Superliner' coaches and headed by two EMD P42s. The main operators of the routes through the town are BNSF and UP, but locomotives of other railroads can make occasional appearances to add some extra colour to the action.
Andersonville is 15 feet by 2.5 feet and with a continuous run through a hidden fiddle yard is designed to provide entertainment to both viewers and operators. Two trains can be in action at any one time and with little switching taking place continuous action is assured. Viewers are invited to see in miniature the colourful modern railroading of the USA. |

Subject: Modern Day Steelworks Era: Modern Era Description: Montkon-Smerk is a modern day layout set in the North East of England, the main focal point of the layout is the scratch built scale model of a blast furnace and blast ovens, the railway part of the layout is quite simple, it comprises of 3 roads, up and down mainlines and a by-Directional goods only line, All are heavily weathered Kato Track, also snaking through the steelworks is a another line to serve the works with MGR Coal trains and steelyard trains, a single forwards and backwards line takes coke from the coking plant to the blast furnace. Industrial locos also serve the rolling mill. Protypical trains of half size run on the 3 mainlines with MGRs, Bogie Tanks, Steel Trains, Engineers Trains and a few DMU'S, You can expect to see a plethora of modern day traction of classes 37 47 56 60 and 66 many in new liveries not available as R.T.R. Subject: TMD - Shunting Yard Era: Present Day Description: Set in the industrial grime of the West Midlands "Soho Yard" is a fictitious modern day TMD yard loosely representing Saltley. It was completed in 2007 and was featured in Model Rail in March 2009, the basic concept of the layout was to build it to exhibition standards and small enough to fit in the back of the car. an oval track runs around the 4'10"X 2'6" Baseboard into a 4 lane fiddle yard, the TMD yard branches of the mainline into the sidings of which there are 4 off, at the other end of the yard there are 2 roads that run through the depot building into the re-Fueling area. To the rear of the yard there is a raised industrial area complete with modern day industrial units. The majority of the buildings are kit bashed and heavily weathered, a good dose of graffiti is daubed onto the depot perimeter wall. There are plenty of cameo scenes to keep the punters attetion as well as coloured light signals that change via toggle switches. On a busy day you can see locomotives of classes 37, 47, 56, 60, and many 66s. The odd 156 unit make a appearance now and then, in the bottom right hand corner there is a small section of urban brum canal and the backscene is of images that have been taken off the internet enlarged and applied to plywood. Soho Yard made it's exhibition debut in early October '09 at our local Earl Shilton Show where it was a popular exhibit. Find us on www.freewebs.com/soho-Yard |

Description: ‘Rorgyle' represents a small country terminus somewhere in GWR territory. It travels to exhibitions by bus and train and that's the reason it's so small. It was designed as a shelf layout to demonstrate that scenic modelling could be achieved in a small space.
-
- Track work is Peco N Gauge Streamline Universal Fine, Code 55. Scenery is polystyrene, covered with filler and coated with a variety of scatter materials. Buildings are card shells covered with filler and scribed to represent stone or overlaid with brick paper. At dusk all the station lamps and most of the buildings light up.
-
- ‘Rorgyle' was originally started at the Warley show at the N.E.C. Back in 1999 when I was asked if I would do a demonstration of modelling a scenic layout in a small space as well as having a layout, ‘Littleton Curve' (Railway Modeller May 1997), on display. At the show I didn't get as much done on ‘Rorgyle' as I'd hoped – spent too much time talking to visitors! I got the boards together, laid the track, installed the electrics and partially ballasted it. Some of the polystyrene contours were constructed, partly coated with filler and various flock powders - and that was it. Returning from the show I put it away and it lay undisturbed until the beginning of 2006.
Rorgyle appeared in the May 2007 issue of Railway Modeller and the video of the layout can be seen on YouTube at http://www.youtube.com/watch?V=fJ8BXkor6JU |

Description: Beamends Colliery (somewhere in the hills of Yorkshire) was so small, it survived all the closures of the 20th century. It is covered with weeds and other vegetation, and the stock is on its beam ends...
But its coal is suddenly in demand from the steam preservation industry, and the beaten-up old wagons (made and distressed for me by Robbie Burns) roll in each day, to be pushed by a shunter into the colliery and drawn out later - full of coal.
There is also a pick-up goods (with lots of shunting) and some odd passenger trains.

Subject: MR-inspired light railway, Pennines Era: Preserved Steam Description: My first exhibition layout, built on a B&Q shelf and recently relaunched on the circuit - its next outing will be at the Braunstone show on 7th November 2009.
The Nivverwas Valley Tramway was built (so the story goes) to transport workers and materials to the site of a new dam in the Pennines. The villagers of Kirkagnes, just over the watershed, seized the opportunity and gained access to the East coast. Gradients were steep, curves tight and trains correspondingly short. The station boasts a Settle and Carlisle station building and goods shed (courtesy of Metcalfe), a sheep dock (it's too high up for cattle) and a coal siding, the domain of "Aldrick's Coal and Coke Merchants". (John Aldrick, N Gauge modeller at the Leeds MRS, has taught and helped me for years.)
The only trains are an occasional 1-coach passenger train, a 3-truck sheep train and a 3-truck pick-up goods train. The latter gives the most fun – if you like shunting, that is. |

Description: The line to Bishop Wearburn was originally a single-line branch off the main line, which by-passed Durham, but was doubled when the diversion was laid. The original branch continues into the Pennines towards Crook whilst the main line forges north to the cathedral city. Travelling south, the line crosses the River Wear adjacent to a late-medieval road-bridge.
Standing next to this is a large Victorian warehouse, now storage for a local brewery, and nearby workers cottages. The land that rises on the south side of the river features inter-war housing and terraces of the Victorian period, with adjacent allotments. As the line approaches the station there is a goods yard featuring a shed, cattle docks and raised coal drops typical of the North Eastern region. Similarly, the station features staggered platforms, the up line housing the main buildings and a footbridge connecting to the down, island platform; from this the branch can be accessed.
Continuing southwards, the branch rises gradually between the main line and exchange sidings overlooked by a church and graveyard, the Rectory, a farmhouse and associated buildings. from the sidings, a headshunt extends north, and access to a turntable can also be obtained. In the early days, much freight (particularly livestock) was handled and the turntable was installed to facilitate larger engines from both Gateshead and Darlington sheds. There is also a single road engine shed to service the branch locomotives.

Description: A small layout dedicated to the workers who help make the railways possible, the trackworkers, the p'way guys.
Set in the mid 60's I wanted to create a space where there was enough room for a good deal of shunting with a purpose to it. Also a loop to leave a train running round. The loop has a reasonably steep hill for the locos to negotiate which is quite fun to see how many trucks is too many! the picture I have included is not quite the finished article as I am continuing to improve it with 'attention to detail'. |

Description: American N gauge set in 1950-60s. Great Northern is the basic railway, but I have a collection of "named trains", and therefore other companies may be seen. The idea is to get big trains running in the big country. There are several working features, e.g. Street car in the town, working crossing, and all lights work, smoke from tunnel, and army camp incident. There are also features of interest, e.g. Long wood trestle, army storage, deep ravine etc. All aimed at entertaining the spectators. There is even some sound! |

Subject: Japanese Railways Era: Modern Description: Temple Falls represents a non protypical Japanese Island route railway generaly in the modern era but preserved steam trains do run. The layout constructs from three modules and has a lower double slab track dedicated to run Shinkansens with a top tier double track with station and factory sidings to run Express and Comuter trains. An extensive Fiddle Yard runs at the rear of the layout
Track is either Kato Unitrack or Tomix Finescale and incorporates automatic signaling and a leval crossing. The diorama incorporates a waterfall and nearby Temple, an older style Japanese wooden station,Working Factory and a Quarry all set in a rocky terrain.
Temple Valley is a automated end to end layout with a top tier terminus station running over a maintenance depot into a tunnel. This depot incorporates various sideings and has a scissor crossing. At the front two further tracks run into a station and one line comutes to a small fishing port. Again trackwork is either Unitrack or Finescale and has a rocky terrain . This layout is designed to stands alongside Temple Falls giving the impresion of one continuous layout. The two layouts can also be configured as a corner section |

Graham Jones is a member of ZClub(GB). |
Description: Blackrock Colorado is a layout built by father & son team, Graham & Damian Jones based loosely on American practices in the mid 60's to late 70's and depicts a coal mine and industrial area on the outskirts of the fictitious town of Blackrock on the edge of the Colorado desert. It may be noticed that there was a junction at the east end of the town this went to the now defunct Greenridge docks and beyond. (Reference to our previous layout).
The layout is totally freelance and therefore allows for the running of locomotives and stock from several railroad companies. The layout is built in the smallest commercial model railway scale, which is Z gauge. With a scale of 220 to 1 and a track width of only 6mm these powerful yet tiny models can be seen hauling long freight trains and passenger trains.
If there is anything you wish to know about Z Gauge please do not hesitate to ask the operators. |

I fell in love with Switzerland and its Railways in particular.I decided to model Swiss Railways in N Gauge. I used a second hand door (plywood faced) for the baseboard. Peco Streamline track was used with First Radius Setrack curves under the tunnels. The scenery was built using block polystyrene roughly carved and glued in place. This was dressed using the wonderful Woodland Scenics products. The backdrop was painted by 'er indoors who also helps operating.Unserstadt was the first Continental layout that we produced .It has over 60 exhibitions to its credit and has won a couple of best in show awards |

Subject: BR (Settle and Carlisle) Era: 1950 / 1960 Description: Bob Harris is an independent Modeller, and a member of the N Gauge Society.
Based on the Settle & Carlisle during the period 1957 - 1964. The layout was built by the late Andy Calvert and has undergone a recent re-wire and extensive modification to buildings and general appearance. The fiddle yard has been expanded and can now hold up to 65 trains. The purpose of the layout is to allow N Gauge to be shown in its best context, trains of a realistic length passing through the scenery with both a Goods Yard, MPD, and Station. We will be running a mixture of steam and early diesel depicting the early part of the steam / diesel changeover period.
(A new layout is also under construction using the Moorcock fiddle yard)
We operate with a travelling team of 2 to 4 persons to keep accomodation costs down, and draw on friends or club members at the show location for a further 2 / 3 back up persons
27th May 2009
Please note that this layout is not available at the moment. It has been put into storage whilst building work is carried out to our property.

Subject: GWR / BR Era: 1940-1960 Description: This layout is showing a rural landscape in Devon, a fictive place between the moors and coasts on a late summer afternoon in the post war time. It is my first layout, starting in 2005 and still under construction until today. Themed GWR, the “Great Way Round”, the track follows geographical circumstances and meets each farmer’s milk chum. As you can see in the track plan and in a lot of pictures of “Midsomer-County” I try to show more a highly detailed landscape in N-gauge than a busy railway operation. Nevertheless you will see either some GWR locos, railcar and stock or changed to a later era with BR locos and stock.
I’m planning to be ready for exhibitions in 2012. My decision to display the layout here is the opportunity for each one to watch the coming developments in Midsomer-County.

Paul Martin is the contact for this layout and

Description: A large N gauge model of Basingstoke station, it's 4 track main line and 2 track junction to the Western at Reading. Track plan is as close as Peco Finescale allows (+/- a siding or two) and all buildings are scratch built from original drawings or extensive photo research. The time is the end of the steam era, with the occassional lapse to permit earlier locos and even the intrusion of post-66 stock.
Large fiddle yards enable an intensive schedule for exhibitions, running full length trains along the 3/4 scale mile scenic area. Our aim is to keep things moving, as we believe that most visitors want to see trains that run.
Stock is a mixture of Farish/Bachmann, Dapol and a significant number of kit built and modified locos, coaches and freight wagons.
Featured in Railway Modeller, Model Rail and Britsh Railway Modelling "Classic Layouts" special.

Subject: DR Era: 1980s Description: This fictional layout represents a cross country line in the former East German province of Saxony, and takes its name from the infamous World War Two prisoner of war camp at Colditz Castle, a photograph of which appears on the backscene.
The principal feature of the layout is the multi span girder bridge which crosses the River Elbe and is made from several Kato bridge kits. The layout has been extended from its original form to include the small town of Colditz, which is entirely fictional, as is the tramway linking the station to remote villages.
The trains represent the former East German Deutsche Reichsbahn state railway in the mid 1980s, a few years before the unification of the two parts of Germany in 1989. At this time, although diesel and electric traction formed the main motive power for both passenger and freight trains, a few surviving steam locomotives could still be seen.

One interesting feature of the layout is the large number of houses (over 100), giving a good impression of terraced housing, built close to the station and the main factory complex. Derek Gibbin is the contact for this layout and
is the Exhibition Co-ordinator of West Midlands N Gauge Group. |
Description: Waterstock is some 20ft long and comprised of 6 ( 4' x 2' ) boards as the main "scenic" model with 4 ( 4'x 1' ) boards for the rear fiddle yard. The track plan can be found on the club's web site, and is an amalgam of Hatton Junction and Yeovil Pen Mill. In this instance Hatton has been moved southwards to rest between Oxford ( Tiddington ) and Thame, and became part of the GWR/GCR joint improvement/expansion of 1897. This saw a better/faster/shorter line for the GWR to Birmingham and access to Marylebone avoiding the Metropolitanline for the GCR. The layout is placed in the 1950's/early 60's period allowing for both steam and early diesel traction to be used, along with a degree of inter regional traffic for variety. Subject: O Scale Garden layout using T gauge Era: Present Description: Anyone for T
The cutlery box layout
“Anyone for T” was built in 2009 and is my first venture into T gauge produced by Eishindo of Japan. T, stands for three, the distance between the rails in millimetres, and is a scale of 1:450 making it now the smallest commercially available model railway. So far only 4 x 4 car, and single car Japanese EMUs are available. Each 4 car set has 2 power cars and working front and rear lights. Power from a purpose built controller is at 4.5 volts DC either by batteries or mains adapter.
My layout is in a cutlery box from Ebay, and features O gauge people and scenery – yes I’ve gone smaller and bigger from my usual layouts to create what I hope will be a private double track T gauge layout being an O gauge garden railway.
All the T gauge track, buildings and accessories are from Eishindo whereas the English garden and people are from a number of UK sources. The flower gardens and lawn were built for me by Rodney Hodge.
Buildings, trees, boats, animals, bicycles and people are already available in T gauge. Flexible track and other items such as points will be released in the future.
The layout appeared as work in progress at the Sutton Coldfield show in 2009 and was completed in time for Zedex in the same year.
It has also appeared on various internet sites such as
http://carendt.us/scrapbook/page90a/index.html#Tgauge
and in a Norwegian model railway magazine the reference is MJ-bladet Volume 3/2009 Argang 30 page 7 Verdens Minste Modelljernbane!

Description: The Airstrip and Army Camp Layout.
This layout was built during 2005 and 2006 and uses excellent dual gauge track on order from GErmany (Aspen Model). In recent years the airstrip has been a small commercial one from which small aircraft have taken off and landed. The flying school is about to close, marking an end to aircraft at this location. Lufthansa have flown in their preserved Junkers plane (Herpa), and the last small plane from the flying club (Fleetline Road and Rail white metal kit) is also present.
a local railway preservation group is trying to save the remaining track, and they are going to make use of the various buildings.
Once there was an extensive military railway throughout the camp and airstrip. The site is fictitious, even though people say they recognise Carohay.
The layout measures 93 cm x 86 cm and is built in an under bed blanket box. The box is one layout, ‘Carohay Airstrip', whilst the lid shows part of the nearby ‘Carohay Camp'. Each half of the layout is in fact the fiddle yard for the other half.
Part of the army camp is now being used by a group of American road vehicle fans,. All these vehicles come from Canada, which have been made and painted by Bob Hunt. He also produced the railcar and the crane.
The control panel was specially built by Len Bane. There are 3 running dual gauge tracks left in situ, which separate to N [standard gauge] and Nn3 [narrow gauge]. The controller will not only switch from track to track but also from N to Nn3 allowing a change of 12 volts DC to 9 volts DC for the Marklin engines.
Three Nn3 white metal locomotive kits have already been built for this layout {Peco and Z Club GB} – all required modified Marklin z gauge 0-6-0 locomotive chassis.
The layout also has on it
· Mobile home kit [NuComp Miniatures]
· Platform [laser wood kit ex Nomonee Railroad]
· Nissan Hut [Rix Products]
· Various vehicles including [Wiking] and Gramodels
· Various buildings from several sources.
And hopefully will also have British outline Nn3 carriages [Kestrel and Worsley Works]- all require chassis and wheels.
Quite an unique layout |

Description: An N gauge layout designed and built by Ken Jones using a cinema usherette ice cream tray in 2002.
The layout is an inner city derelict area, which in parts, is being renovated behind a building being demolished. Trains enter the yard under a road bridge - now overgrown and used by cows.
The main building (Model Power prebuilt kit) once was a hotel with its own grounds. The developers want to lift the track and seal off the entrance under the bridge. so the scene is caught somewhere during this change. Already established on the site, but not yet occupied is one new unit (Kestrel Kit) and a café just opened. (Modified Japanese Kit) with internal
Lights.
The theatre, formerly the cinema is still on the left-hand side, note the Neon signs - Theater/Café (Noch Folien) used to give added interest. |

Description: The Second Box File Layout
Since the town bypass was built through part of the orchard, the town has developed its own transport policy and now runs a light railway from a new town centre station with a connection running through the town to the nearest mainline station. This was achieved by cutting through the rocks, forming a new station and a small park in what was once a dreadful part of the town.
Cars and lorries are restricted from the town centre, but a free secure car park and unloading area has been created out of site behind the shops.
The multiple unit is a Kato chassis with a Japanese modified kit supplied by Peter Dibben
The trees in the orchard are by Jules,
The station is an Aurora kit, no longer available.
The layout has working lights by Viesmann
The people are by Preiser
The fencing is by Faller and by FKS Modellbau
The vending machines, hot dog stand and preserved stationary steam boiler [steam donkey] are from the Ebay shop in USA
The seagulls are from Karen Rush art studios
Embox shows what can be built in a box file and is my second such layout. Pending has been seen at several exhibitions. It is hoped that Embox will also be a favourite small layout at exhibitions.
This time the layout includes working lights |

Description: A z gauge layout by Ken Jones.
The layout is 123 cm x 50 cm and features the fictitious small German town of Kendorf in the mountains, famous for it's small chapel, now a tourist site, and the Martyr's cross on top of the cliff.
The railway enters the town with it's typical German one platform for local trains from single track tunnels from inside the mountains.
There is room at the station for through trains to pass in either direction or to hold them on the appropriate loop.
Notice the beer garden popular with tourists and town folk, the 2 people meeting behind the shop, the people on bicycles.
The trackwork and electrics are all Marklin as is all the rolling stock, including a mixture of steam and diesel locomotives as well as a special beer train and the City Bahn Express.
The buildings are Faller and Kibri. The radio mast is from Blair Line in the USA. Other accessories are from Markin and Noch. The street lights are Viesmann.
The fiddle yard at the back contains loops and storage sidings.
The whole layout is no more than the size of a large draw in a old dressing table. It was completed in 2004 |

Description: An N gauge layout designed and built by Ken Jones using an A4 box file in 2003, inspired by OO9 layout by Barrie Etter.
The layout is a scene from an industrial heritage site, that some people want to preserve, and others want to demolish and redevelop. Sometimes the developers arrive by helicopter [Revell customised kit] but most days the conservationists have a 0-6-0 working a circular track throughout the site.Normally it is a Farish Austerity in ex works NCB livery or a 08 shunter.
There is an abandoned mineral line and the buildings were made from bits and pieces from other models.
The name "Pending" comes from the fact, like in real life, no decision has been made on the future of the site, or because "Pending" is often put into a box file. |

Ken Jones is the Chairman of West Midlands N Gauge Club. |
Description: This freelance N gauge layout measuring less than 2ft by 18 in was built in 1999 by Ken Jones to act as a test bed for some of his rolling stock but went on to become a layout in its own right. It could be anywhere in rural England, Scotland or Wales and various locomotives negotiate this tight single track line passing under the waterfall which was the place that the main line, now a mere siding, joined this delightful scene. The waterfall and river are made from a 2 pack Faller system, the track is Peco and the controller is a special one built locally by Len Bane to enable slow running. Tender locomotives and those with a long wheelbase cannot negotiate the tight curves. Look out for campers, a trainspotter, and a man with his dog and another one cycling home from work. |

Description: The era is the early 60s Western region when duties were shared by diesels and steam locos. At a scale length of a mile this layout is designed to maximise the running of scale length trains and to ensure a constant flow of trains to keep the public entertained. Many freight trains run with 50+ wagons which allows the children watching to brush up on their numeric skills!
However the main feature of Oxendale Junction is as a showcase for the unique fleet of 500 freight vehicles includes numerous kits, scratch-Builds and many Peco, Farish and Continental models, which have been butchered beyond recognition. Such work is rarely attempted in N Gauge. The wagons are correctly lettered, weathered and chalked up ready to go, or not to go in the case of condemned wagons sitting in the cripple siding. Although the layout has been around for many years the fleet of wagons is continuously being added to so that there is always something new to see.
As well as main line running we also operate pilot duties, banking, shunting and branch line workings.
Scenic features have been gathered from along the OWW as well as all over Oxfordshire. The three bridges come from CharIbury, Combe and Banbury; parcels bay from Worcester; telegraph poles from Kingham; flourmill from Bledington; farm from Lyneham; mill from Shipton under Wychwood and station gardens from Kidlington. Yet to come is Deddington garage, Bruern saw mill, Finstock bridge and a herd of 100 or so Friesians to create traffic chaos on Station Road as they head for the fields after milking.
Press exposure has included Model Rail, BRM, Modelling Railways Illustrated, the Railway Modeller and several other magazines. |

Description: West Tilgate is the new N gauge layout under construction by Crawley Model Railway Society. It occupies a space 20' x 3' in an elongated oval format with the fiddle yard located behind the scenic section.
The scenic area is 20' x 2' depicting a double track mainline passing through open scenery with a double track secondary line diverging from it. A station is provided to allow connection between services using both lines in addition to terminating branch trains. Alongside the station is a goods yard with limited facilities for the transfer of local agricultural products and goods for nearby commerce and industry. The architecture and general appearance is based on the Southern style of the late 50s, although on club evenings members will run stock according to their preferences.

Subject: Japanese - Chuo Main Line Era: Present Day Description: Designed with exhibition running in mind, Yamanouchi Oshika is a combination of both continuous running, which with a sizable fiddle yard allows for a wide variety of different trains to be run, with terminal platforms and freight facilities allowing for more involved operations. The layout has also been planned to take into account the non-railway enthusiast with the aim to maintain interest with constant activity, as well as a show-case for the many and varied types of Japanese trains available on the ready to run market.
The Chuo (Central) main line runs for 400 km, linking Tokyo and Nagoya via the mountainous inland route on the main island of Japan - Honshu. Yamanouchi Oshika is a middle-sized town in the Yamanashi Prefecture, situated on the Takao to Shiojiri section of the Chuo line.
The Chuo main line is busy; mainly with local passenger traffic, although a number of limited express services do operate from Tokyo. Freight traffic is mainly bulk, oil and container trains, as is common with most of Japan.
Some modellers licence has been taken to converge three lines at this one location; the Fuji Kyuko; Minobu (with its distinctive Red and white liveried stock) and the diesel-operated Koumi line. These railways all link with the Chuo line along this section, but at separate locations. There is also a light-rail, operated by tram trains, which heads off into the Japanese Alps. The freight yard is mainly concerned with the transfer of traffic between the electrified Chuo main line and the diesel Koumi line, as well as some limited local traffic.
This layout is fully PAT certified. |

Subject: BR(MR) Era: Late 1950's Description: The layout is based on an imaginary ex-Midland railway in the West Riding of Yorkshire.
When the Leeds and Bradford railway opened up to Skipton there was a proposal to build a branch from Kildwick to Lothersdale.
However the amount of potential traffic was not considered sufficient to warrant the expenditure
My theory is that an independent local company built the branch, much as what happened with the Worth Valley, and had the Midland Railway operate it for a percentage of the profits, but instead of running towards Kildwick on the Leeds – Skipton line the branch ran towards Earby on the Skipton – Colne line. Eventually the Midland bought out the local company and replaced the temporary wooden buildings with standard Midland Railway designs.
The layout is set in the late 1950's when the branch was starting to see its first diesel trains replacing the ex-LMS steam locos on some workings
Traffic is mainly local passenger services to Skipton with the occasional through coach to London (St.Pancras)[sx] or Bournemouth West [so]. Goods traffic is general local goods and agricultural merchandise although a quarry on the branch provides some stone traffic
Rolling stock is mainly Farish, with some Peco and Minitrix items, as well as the odd kit built vehicle.
All the stock has been fitted with dg couplings (so there is not too much of "The big hand from the sky" [hopefully!!]) and the majority has been repainted and renumbered. All the locos have been renumbered as Skipton or Manningham based locos and weathered to some degree. |
