Fleet Lane

OO Gauge

Railway Sign

BR Eastern Region/London Transport - 1948-1962.

This new layout is based on Farringdon station, with modeller's licence, and will feature two levels of running and British Railways and London Transport operations.

Based loosely on Farringdon Station in Central London, Fleet Lane represents an interchange station between London Underground Metropolitan Line and British Railways Widened Lines in the late 1950s to early 1960s. A variety of London Transport stock and British Railway stock from across all regions run in a brick lined cutting through an urban diorama. In addition to the Eastern Region services on the Widened Lines, the station also sees Southern and Midland trains via Blackfriars. A link between the Metropolitan and Widened Lines allows Western Region goods trains to run to Smithfield depot off scene.

As you can see from the photographs (starting from the foot of this page), how it gradually evolved. Considering work started in July 2014, progress has been quite extraordinary. The crossover points had to be hand-built. The laying of the chairs on the girder bridge had to be done individually. The station building is in-situ and has received interior details. Pavements and walls been fitted, painted and weathered. A street scene at the station end of the layout is gradually taking shape. The low-relief buildings and distillery (which all had to be scratch-built) are in place along the front of the layout. Point motors have been fitted and tested prior to the track around them being ballasted. The fiddle yard base boards are in place and track laying is complete. The third and fourth rails have been fitted on the 'Tube' lines. The warehouse (which uses Skytrex Model Railway brick-built factory warehouse facades) has received interior details, including a (non-functioning) lift, and lighting. The station footbridge is more or less completed. The Fire Station and Cinema are based on Kingsway Model kits. Most importantly we now have trains running! The station roof is the next main project.

Due to the logistical nature of setting up and dismantling the layout, it cannot attend one day shows.
