A G R Model Railway Store
I visited the shop on my way back from a Trix (TTRCA) event last month. It is still well stocked with various makes of model railway items (Hornby, Heljan, Oxford, Bachmann, Peco, etc) and the owner is friendly. It is definitely worth a visit if you are in the area. Make sure you know the address though as it is tucked down the end off a short pedestrian dead end. I knew it was there from when I last visited in about 2012.

Model Railways Direct
One of the best model railway specialists for online purchases. The website is exemplary - Very easy to navigate, check stock levels and place an order. Comprehensive range of products, keen prices and they regularly have some good special offers. Dispatch is always quick and orders are carefully packed to ensure that items arrive in perfect condition. A very professional dealer offering high levels of service to the online customer.

Scalerail Model Centre
With the availability of model railway locos and stock from Hornby and Bachmann becoming less available and also more expensive (And thus more risky for shops to stock in bulk), Scalerail have branched out into selling ready to display model aircraft; both new and secondhand. Price competition from the likes of Hattons and Rails of Sheffield can be a problem for all small retailers but they do their best to be reasonably comparable for new model railway items once the postage is taken into account. More stock than is apparent goes through the shop: it is just that much of it is pre-Ordered by customers (Such as me!) in advance. The shop is still useful for the smaller items such as those from Peco and Oxford Rail.

Invicta Model Rail Ltd
I've been buying lots of rolling stock and scenic items from Invicta since I began updating my model railway about a year ago. I only live about 10 minutes away so they really are my 'local' model shop and there is handy free parking behind the shop too. They have an excellent website and can order items on request. I've mainly been buying American-Outline locos and rolling stock of which they carry a huge amount and they also have a very wide selection of scenic materials which have been ideal for my needs. They also carry a lot of British outline stock from the usual manufactures as well so in a nutshell I would strongly recommend Invicta Model Rail. In conclusion and just as important for the customer is that Kerry and Vernon are very knowledgable and happen to be nice people to deal with too.

Hatton's Model Railways Ltd
Recently purchased the Oxford/Hattons ICI hoppers 1990’s weathered version, and was surprised to find a representation of the removed ICI letters on panels 2,4 and 6, not on central panels 3,4 and 5. When asked about it, Anthony sent me photographic evidence! Can’t complain about that, but does anybody else think it highly unusual? Weren’t the letters always on panels 3,4. And 5?

Salisbury Model Centre 2010 Ltd
Chance visit because I spotted the shop on driving into Salisbury. Friendly proprieter who was actively engaged in getting a customer's loco working when I arrived, and proved very happy to take time over a product enquiry. Offered use of a continuous run test track for testing ahead of purchase, slways a useful facility. Fair stock of RTR model railway product, and turned up a little item I have been looking for at a reasonable price.

Scograil Model Railways
I recently ordered a model locomotive from Scograil's website which unfortunately (No fault of the shop's) was not working on arrival. I contacted the shop and was advised on how to return the item; which I did that afternoon. I was amazed to find that they sent a replacement model to me that same day (This model works perfectly); before the original could possibly have reached them. Such service turned my initial disappointment to great joy. Words cannot express how delighted I am with this shop, would that there were more like them, highly recommended!!!

The Locoshed Manchester
The owner, Jim, is a very friendly and helpful owner. If it's not too busy you'll get a cup of tea and a chat! Excellent second hand selection that you can have a look through. A bit of an Aladdins Cave that reminds me of the original Hattons in Liverpool. Not the big one, but the original from 'back oil the day'!

Period Houses in Miniature & Think Tank
A small unit in an arcade, but it has a comprehensive stock of modelling supplies such as styrene as well as aircraft and armour kits. A helpful owner, who was happy to open a kit box for inspection (And subsequent purchase).
Now on the list of places to visit in Shrewsbury.

Malc is now operating out of a well-Stocked shop across the county boundary in Ilkeston, Derbyshire rather than in Nottinghamshire. His wide range of model railway items in the popular scales and gauges is well laid out, and I have managed to street-Park right outside the shop each time I have visited. It's only a short drive off the M1 motorway (Junction 26), so it's handy both for locals and those passing through the area.

I used to visit this shop regularly when I went into Nottingham. Nowadays I rarely do either. Others might be interested to know that, after two or three years of uncertainty, Mr Grain the owner has announced that it will close by Christmas. Malcolm the manager is now 67, but postponed his retirement whilst a new owner was sought. See the Nottingham Post article at https://www.nottinghampost.Com/news/business/popular-Hockley-Model-Shop-Set-1972621 .
Note to Adrian: This is as much for your information as for a conventional review. Best regards. Robin.

Very knowledgeable, very helpful. For a relatively small shop a very wide selection. Plenty of parking and a cafe near by to park any uninterested hangers on whilst enjoying a browse.
