SCRS Outing 2016

Being a diary of events and happenings at the Sutton Coldfield Railway Society during 2019.

February 2019

Les Nixon, the distinguished the railway photographer, again kindly agreed to judge the annual photographic competition. Although there were a large number of entries, Les was able to give constructive comments on each photograph before naming his choices for first, second and third place winners in each of the three categories (see the accompanying slideshow). The members present then selected the overall winner from the three first place winners.

April 2019

The 2019 Model Railway Exhibition was held on the weekend of 27th and 28th April. The traditional mix of high quality layouts, trade stands, audio visual presentations, and model engineering demonstrations were on show. With attendance held at a similar level to 2018 the show received some really good feedback with the Public Vote for Best Layout in show proving to be very popular.

June 2019

The Society's most ambitious trip to date took place over the first four days of June. Using the Holiday Inn, Bexley as a base, the group visited the Kent and East Sussex, the Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch and the Bluebell Railways - Not forgetting the Nene Valley Railway at Peterborough on the way down! Shed visits were included, though it wasn't all railways, with a visit to the beautiful gardens of Sissinghurst Castle and an optional trip to Bodium Castle.
The weather was kind once again for the trip, and the long light evenings of early June meant that we were able to pack plenty in!

July 2019

July saw Society members embark on a day visit to the Mid-Norfolk Railway. As well as riding on the scheduled services between Dereham and Wymondham Abbey, the group also enjoyed a trip in a privately chartered DMU along the line from Dereham to Worthing Crossing. This section of the railway is not normally open to the public and so was of particular interest. As a break from railways, some members opted to spend time taking a conducted tour of Wymondham Abbey, whilst others chose to visit the Yaxham Light Railway, which is situated adjacent to Yaxham station.
Although it was a relatively early start, the traffic to and from Norfolk flowed freely, and the enjoyment of the day fully justified the long journey.

August 2019

In August members of SCRS and their families enjoyed their annual visit to the home of the Sutton Coldfield Model Engineers at Little Hay. Our thanks once again to the SCMES for their kind hospitality.
August also brought a visit to the Foxfield Railway in North Staffordshire. This was no ordinary visit, however, as we had exclusive use of the railway for the day! As well as rides along the line on the 'SCRS Special' there was a tour of the 'on-Site' colliery, and numerous (At least twenty!) run pasts of a specially marshalled freight train. A highly enjoyable and unusual day was rounded off by meal in the station buffet before the coach journey back to Sutton.

Looking Ahead

As usual in December we have our pre-Christmas 'Ladies Night'. Following highly successful pattern of last year, we will have a musical evening including a fish and chip supper, and barely a mention of railways! This year the headline musical act will be 'The Bluebird Belles' - a professional vintage harmony trio.
Looking even further ahead, planning is well advanced for the 2020 Exhibition, also a multi day trip to railways in the south of England featuring in particular the Isle of Wight.
