SCRS DIARY
2018

Being a diary of events and happenings at the Sutton Coldfield Railway Society during 2018.

March 2018

Once again Les Nixon very kindly agreed to judge our annual Photographic Competition. Despite the large number of entries, Les was able to offer helpful comments on each photograph before going on to select the first, second and third place winners in each of the three categories (shown in the slideshow alongside). From the three first place winners, the members present selected an overall winner.

April 2018

The 2018 Model Railway Exhibition was held on the weekend of 28th and 29th April. The traditional mix of high quality layouts, trade stands, audio visual presentations, and model engineering demonstrations was given added an impetus by 2018 being the 50th anniversary year of the Society. In particular a number of the layouts, all past and present regulars on the exhibition circuit, were owned by Society members. This extra effort was rewarded by the highest visitor attendance for five years and very favourable customer comments.

The 2019 Exhibition will be held on 27th and 28th April. As more details become available they will be shown on the web page marked 'Exhibition'.

May 2018

In most years we have an evening visit to a local railway venue. Given the special significance of 2018, we had a longer day trip to the Welshpool and Llanfair Light Railway followed by the Llangollen Railway. On a day of beautiful sunshine and clear skies, we had special trains on each railway and, in a first for the Society, we had photographic run pasts. (Some of the results can be seen in the accompanying slide show). an evening meal on the train at Llangollen completed a memorable spring day out.

June 2018

The beautiful late spring weather continued into June for the annual two night/three day trip. This year’s venue was the South West of England. As usual the whole package was organised by members of the SCRS committee.
From a base at the Holiday Inn in Taunton, we visited the West Somerset Railway on day 1, the Dartmouth Steam Railway and the South Devon Railway on day 2 - not forgetting a river cruise on the coal fired paddle steamer ‘Kingswear Castle’ - and the Gloucester and Warwickshire Railway on day 3. There were also opportunities to explore Buckfastleigh and Broadway, whilst the more dedicated enjoyed shed tours of the SDR and GWR respectively.

July 2018

As the first formal meeting of the SCRS took place in 1968, 2018 was the 50th Anniversary of the Society's formation. To mark the occasion in style, the Society hired the Great Central Railway's 'First Class Dining Train' for the afternoon and evening of 26th July. Coaches ferried the party to Quorn & Woodhouse station for the first of several runs along the line in Pullman bar cars. During a two hour late afternoon break at Loughborough there was an optional shed tour while the musicians 'Fret and Fiddle' performed on the platform for those who preferred to sit and enjoy the sunshine.
The dining train left Loughborough again in the early evening. A three course meal was served in the Pullman cars and the magician Russ Harvey toured the cars performing his own amusing brand of table magic.
This was one of the hottest days of a very hot year though this did nothing to diminish the enthusiasm, good humour and camaraderie of the party. Also, despite the very dry conditions and associated fire risk, the GCR were still able to provide a steam locomotive for the visit, albeit over a restricted length of line. This was undoubtedly a very pleasant and enjoyable celebration of the Society's fifty years.

SCRS visit to SCMES at Little Hay August 2018

August 2018

In August members of SCRS and their families enjoyed their annual visit to the home of the Sutton Coldfield Model Engineers at Little Hay. As usual beautifully engineered trains of a number of gauges were in steam and running and giving rides to all ages.

December 2018

Our annual pre-Christmas Ladies Night, for members, wives and partners, followed a similar format to the highly successful 2017 event. Following a fish and chip supper, there was a musical cabaret hosted by Les Ross and featuring the very versatile singer Michael James (big band crooning to rock and roll), and the highly talented instrumental group 'Fret and Fiddle'. ('Fret and Fiddle' performed for us on Loughborough station during our main 50th anniversary celebration event in July. by popular demand they returned for the Ladies Night playing more arrangements of popular songs in the style of the 'Hot Club de Paris'.) As in previous years this was a highly enjoyable, purely social evening - with no mention of railways!

Looking Ahead

Given that 2018 was a particularly special year for SCRS, following it was always going to be a hard ask. Nevertheless the organizing committee have raised the bar still higher, with the Society’s first three night/ four day trip planned for June. This will visit railways in the South east of England. In July a long, but hopefully highly rewarding day is planned to the mid Norfolk Railway, with a trip included over part of the line which is not normally open to the public. Then in August the Society has the exclusive use for the day of the Foxfield Railway. All of this is of course in addition the regular programme (see Meetings page). So, 2019 promises much to look forward to! (photos courtesy of Clive Harden and Clive Pipe)
