SCRS DIARY
2017

Being a diary of events and happenings at the Sutton Coldfield Railway Society during 2017.

February 2017:

Once again we were very pleased to have Les Nixon, the well known railway photographer, judge our annual photographic competition. Despite the large number of entries, Les was able to offer helpful, positive comments on each photograph before selecting the four category winners. from these the members present selected an overall winner.

April 2017:

The 2017 Model Railway Exhibition was held on the weekend of 22nd and 23rd April. There 15 high quality layouts, a wide variety of trade stands, audio visual presentations, and a display, including live steamings, by the Sutton Coldfield Model Engineers.
Society activities were reflected in a display of photographic competition entries, and the continuous showing of a newly commissioned and professionally produced, high definition DVD of a year in the life of the Society.
The 2018 Exhibition will be held on the 28th and 29th April 2018. As more details become available they will be shown on the web page marked ‘Exhibition’.

June 2017

For the two night/three day trip this year we headed to the North West of England. As in previous years, the package of transport, heritage rail travel, and accommodation was organised by members of the SCRS committee. from a base at the Holiday Inn in Preston, we visited the East Lancashire Railway and the West Lancashire Railway on day 1; the Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway, including a cruise on Lake Windermere, on day 2; the Embsay and Bolton Abbey Railway, and the Ribble Steam Railway on day 3. A hectic but highly enjoyable three days, even if it did rain on the Saturday (it was the Lake District after all!).

July 2017

Normally we have an evening visit to a local railway venue in July. This year by way of a change, we had a day visit to the Welshpool and Llanfair Light Railway. Besides a return trip on the line, we toured the workshop, engine and carriage sheds.

August 2017

In August, as well as out annual visit to the Balleny Green (Little Hay) home of the Sutton Coldfield Model Engineers (see also the diary entries for August 2015 and 2016), we had a day trip to the East Somerset and Avon Valley Railways. The highlight of the visit was Sunday lunch on the ‘Mendip Belle’ dining train. Although rather wet at times, a good time was had by all.

Looking Ahead:

In December our annual Ladies Night will take the form of a meal followed by a musical cabaret. Next year, 2018, is a special year for SCRS being the 50th anniversary of the formation of the club. A number of events and visits are being planned, including a three day trip to Devon.
