SCRS DIARY
2015

Being a diary of events and happenings at the Sutton Coldfield Railway Society during 2015.

February 2015:

The Annual Photographic Competition was judged by the well-known railway photographer Les Nixon. A very high number of entries were eventually whittled down to four Category winners and then one overall winner.

April 2015:

The 2015 Model railway Exhibition was held on the weekend of 25th and 26th April. It was one of our most successful ever and boasted fifteen high quality layouts, trade stands, digital presentations, a display of photographic competition entries, and a display by the Sutton Coldfield Model Engineers. See details of the 2016 Exhibition.

June 2015:

This year we had our first ever two night/three day trip. It was to the railways of the North East at the beginning of June. Like all of our trips the whole package of transport, heritage rail travel and, in this case hotel accommodation, was organised by members of the SCRS Committee. On our way north, we stopped off at Barrow Hill (picture), and the following morning found us at the Wensleydale Railway, for a DMU journey into the beautiful Yorkshire countryside, with our "SCRS Special" headboard (picture). We then had a pleasant couple of hours at the National Railway Museum outstation at Shildon, where we saw locomotives and the Hackworth buildings and memorabilia (picture). On final day, we had free time in Whitby with fish and chips of course, then we took a class 25 headed train to Grosmont, where 60007 Sir Nigel Gresley took us and our headboard to Pickering (picture).

July 2015:

We usually have an evening visit in July, and this year it was to the nearby Chasewater Railway. Having travelled there in a vintage bus, we had exclusive use of the site for the evening with a tour of the shed, and visits to the signal box and museum, before a special guards van ride to the end of the line and back.

August 2015-1:

We had our annual Saturday afternoon visit to the home of the Sutton Coldfield Model Engineers at Little Hay.

August 2015-2:

Towards the end of August, we had a day tour to west Wales. Our normal good luck with the weather deserted us on this occasion, but the rain stopped for a while on the Talyllyn Railway where we enjoyed exclusive use of a train for a return journey, with the headboard of course (picture)! A deluge accompanied our ride on the Fairbourne Railway (picture), but a hearty meal at a hotel in Dolgellau thawed everyone out nicely!

September 2015:

SCRS organisers invitations to the Statfold Barn Railway enthusiasts days for its members.

December 2015:

Ladies night - This was an evening just before Christmas for members and their partners comprising a meal, live entertainment and a film presentation.

Looking ahead:

The long tour for June 2016 is to the South Coast and will include the Swanage and Mid Hants Railways. A one day trip to the Epping Ongar and Leighton Buzzard Railways is planned for August and there will be an evening trip to Amerton in July.
